Take Action Now To Support Senator Santorium's PAWS Bill
1/3/2005 --

Puppy mills are mass-breeding operations that treat breeding dogs like ``factories,`` churning out countless puppies for sale. These facilities put profits before animal welfare, providing puppies with little veterinary care, poor shelter, and no human socialization. Because of a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act, which allows puppy mills to sell directly to the public without oversight, many of these facilities are exempt from the minimum standards of care required by the AWA. Most states don`t inspect these operations either.

1/5/2005 -- There Should Be a Law

Against Forcing Families

to Abandon their Pets

There are many “Lessons to be Learned” from Hurricane Katrina and there will be a lot of time and effort spent by many to do just that. One of these lessons should be that we need legislation at the National level that makes it illegal for the Federal, State, and Local Authorities to force individuals and families to abandon their pets during or after a Natural disaster. This should also include private rescue and aid groups such as the American Red Cross.

Sixty-five per cent of the households in the United States have a dog or a cat. Public opinion polls show that of these households, 72% consider their pets an absolute part of their family and another 20% consider them somewhat part of their family. The fact is that there is no larger demographic group in the country. There are over 220 million pet owners in this country and they do not want to see tens of thousands of pets starving and dying as a result of “ Government Forced Abandonment”.

Our politicians will respond when faced with an organized effort and all the reasons that prevent caring for pets during disasters will go away and they will find solutions. Votes matter and our elected officials at all levels must be held accountable. When government doesn’t care about or treat any part of the American Family with respect and sensitivity then it is wrong. Emergencies and disasters are always a difficult time for everyone, but “ It is Never the Wrong Time to do the Right Thing” and providing help and a safe haven for America’s Pets is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately it is clear that this will only occur with a Federally Legislated Mandate.

1/6/2005 --
A Message to all

Elected Officials

``VOTE FOR PETS``

If Not Then We Won’t

Vote for You

The hundreds of millions of pet owners and lovers in the United States must do a better job of letting our elected officials at all levels know that we want them to be aware and supportive of issues that make life better for America’s pets.

The callous and heartless acts taken by the agencies that forced people to abandon their pets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina is a reflection of the lack of political influence that exists when it comes to the lives and welfare of pets.

Sixty-five percent of the households in the U.S. have a dog or a cat as part of their family. Yet when their welfare is placed in the hands of government officials, they are treated and viewed as unimportant and expendable much like a piece of furniture.

When have you ever heard a politician talk about what they plan to do for our homeless animals and family pets? It is simply not on their agenda and the reason that is so is that we as pet owners and lovers have not demanded the attention this issue deserves.

Politicians are accustomed to sharing their views with the voters on hundreds of issues before every election and are accustomed to filling out questionnaires sent to them from many interest groups.

It is long past the time when we should have started asking them questions and learning whether or not our candidates plan to work for and Vote for Pets. If not then it must be a consideration before we give them our vote.

We as pet lovers cannot blame the Republicans or the Democrats, but rather we must blame ourselves for not being better organized politically. However, we can be and with the Internet and email there is no limit to what “Pet Power” can accomplish.

When faced with losing votes, our politicians will become pet advocates. They will suddenly be concerned with the Homeless Animal Problem, become advocates of Spay/Neuter/Adopt, and they will make it a law for our pets to rescued, rather than be abandoned. before and after natural disasters.

What has happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina should be a “Call to Arms “ for all pet owners and we must answer this call. Let’s not let the tens of thousands of pets who, were forced to be abandoned, to have suffered and died in vain.

1/8/2005 --
PetsTV emailed every U.S. Senator and Representative about the dire situation of the animal victims of Katrina. We received only one thoughtful reply, from Senator Joseph Lieberman. It is as follows:

Dear PetsTV:

Thank you for your letter regarding the animals that were left behind during the rescue effort following the Hurricane Katrina tragedy in New Orleans.

Hurricane Katrina was an enormously powerful act of nature. It was certainly not caused by any government. But governmental failures in preparing for, and responding to, Hurricane Katrina allowed much more suffering and property destruction to occur than should have. I am saddened and horrified by the pain, suffering, and tragedy caused by what may turn out to be the worst natural disaster in American history. Millions of Americans are currently pulling together and reaching out to help the victims of Katrina. We here in Washington must now come together to help the victims by fixing our emergency response system and restoring the public`s confidence in our government.

It is heartbreaking to hear of the stories where families were forced to leave their pets behind as they followed instructions to evacuate or as they were being rescued. During my time in public life, I have always felt an obligation to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. I believe that government has a responsibility to protect our non-human friends as well as our citizens and residents, and I am disheartened that animals are being left to starve and die in New Orleans and its surrounding areas. As the ranking member of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, I have joined the Chairman, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), in calling for an investigation on the immense failure in the government`s response to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. The committee will investigate all aspects of this disaster, including what the government could have done to ensure that adequate resources were available to protect, and meet the needs of, all who were in the storm`s path.

Fortunately, commander of Task Force Katrina, Lieutenant General Russel Honore, has announced that soldiers will start to evacuate some of the pets left behind by their owners as well as those belonging to residents who have not left because they did not want to leave their pets. In addition, many animal protection organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are doing the work that needs to be done in order to rescue animals that were left behind. Volunteers are at work around the clock rescuing as many animals as possible and reuniting them with their owners. As an animal lover myself, please rest assured I will continue to do all I can in Congress to ensure that as many animals as possible are rescued. Meanwhile, I urge you to support the work that animal protection organizations are currently doing.

My official Senate web site is designed to be an on-line office that provides access to constituent services, Connecticut-specific information, and an abundance of information about what I am working on in the Senate on behalf of Connecticut and the nation. I am also pleased to let you know that I have launched an email news update service through my web site. You can sign up for that service by visiting
http://lieberman.senate.gov and clicking on the ``Subscribe Email News Updates`` button at the bottom of the home page. Additionally, the web site for the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is designed to provide visitors with information about the matters of the Committee, including news regarding our investigation into the preparation for, and response to Hurricane Katrina. You can access the schedule of upcoming hearings, view press releases, track legislation that has been sent to the Committee and view other Committee information by visiting http://hsgac.senate.gov. I hope these are informative and useful.

Thank you again for letting me know your views and concerns. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or comments about our work in Congress.

Sincerely,

Joseph I. Lieberman
UNITED STATES SENATOR

1/10/2005 --
An Open Letter to all Government and Elected Officials on behalf of Pet Owners and Lovers

Subject: Save Our Pets

Over two weeks after Hurricane Katrina, many unanswered questions remain about how the entire rescue effort has been handled. Even the President of the United States has seemed powerless to get the resources of the Federal Government to work together in an effective manner. The human suffering and loss is beyond the imagination of most Americans.

While acknowledging that people come first, it still challenges the mind to see how callous the authorities and agencies involved in the aftermath of this tragedy have been toward the thousands of pets trapped as a result of this storm.

News report after report has chronicled how people refused to evacuate because they were not allowed to take their pets with them. People felt this way because they consider their pets to be part of their family and could no more leave them than they could leave a human family member. There can be no doubt that many people and their pets died as a result of the cruel indifference of the authorities.

This is not the first time that pets have been forgotten in natural disasters. However, due to the unprecedented suffering of the abandoned Katrina pets, the issue has received widespread media coverage. As result of the public outcry, the Coast Guard and the National Guard have begun letting people take their pets out with them and actually are now rescuing some of the thousands of pets that remain stranded.

Many terrible things have occurred as a result of Hurricane Katrina, but hopefully there will be valuable lessons learned. One of the lessons must be a mandatory requirement that all disaster relief efforts include the rescue and care of pets. People should never again be forced to abandon their pets as a condition for being rescued themselves.

What has the American Red Cross done to help care for abandoned pets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? In past disasters, we do not know of anything they have done to provide for victims’ pets and our information is that they do not allow pets in their shelters. But regardless of what they have done, they can do better and could be a major force in helping to correct this problem.

The good news is that this problem is solvable and it can be fixed at a very small cost. All it takes are cages, food, water, and more importantly new policies, regulations, and a caring attitude. There will be quite a psychological boost to the people and children in these shelters knowing they are helping these pets that depend totally on us to care for them.

Of course, for the present we must continue to focus our energies on saving the Katrina Pets and to reunite as many as possible with their owners and, when that is not possible, to find them loving homes. So many people and groups are working tirelessly on this and thank God for their efforts. We should all donate what we can to help.

But when this is over we must start a campaign to get the message out to our Local, State and Federal Government that we want this to be the last disaster where authorities turn their back on and force abandonment of our family pets.

It is not unreasonable for us to expect the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to make provisions for the security of family pets that find themselves in the middle of any unforeseen disaster.

Hopefully, the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA will take the lead to come up with plans that require this. Only organizations such as these, with their millions of members, have the influence necessary to convince government leaders and the American Red Cross about the importance, the correctness and the necessity of saving our pets.

We have the ability and collective influence to change the current policy of indifference and neglect. For the love and devotion that our pets give us --we must do it.

Twas the Night Before Christmas in the Mills of Missouri

12/19/2005 --

By Robin Pressnall

`Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the mills,
not a puppy was stirring, it was strangely quite still.

While back at the pole, Santa readied the sleigh
to pick up these mill dogs, it was such a long way!

The reindeer were dressing all quick in a hurry
They were headed for RESCUE, and straight for MISSOURI!

On Dasher on Dancer on Comet and Cupid.
Those pups go to Pet Shops! We know! We`re not stupid!

As his sleigh did approach, the mill gates opened wide,
Santa called to them all, and they all jumped inside!

On Poodles, on Bichons, on Golden Retrievers!
Grab up the babies, we save those for grievers!

On Westies, on Lhasas, on cute Weenie Boogers,
On Shih Tzus and Scotties, they`re all sweet as sugar!

On Schnauzers, and Maltese, on Wire Haired Fox Terriers!
We`ve got room for ALL, the more now, the merrier!

And the sleigh just grew bigger as they all made more room,
These pups lives were changing! No more gloom and doom!

While out on the lawns there arose such a clatter
The millers ran out to see what was the matter!

When they found their ``stock`` gone, how the millers did sob,
while a Voice from above boomed, ``GO GET A REAL JOB!``

As it seemed it could not get much better than this,
I started to wake, did I dream all of this???

There was no red sleigh, no reindeer with wings.
I guess it was sadly, just one of those things,

That you dream and you dream, till one day `twill be.
That glorious day, when the mills are history!

And I think as we tell them, and tell them again,
Soon it will be that we all know that when,

One buys from a pet shop, there are pups you don`t see.
The Mama and Daddy, who are longing to be,

loved by a family, and scratched on the heads.
Not sleeping on wire, that they now call their beds.

One day it will be, oh how that will feel!
We won`t mill our puppies like paper and steel!

And I heard it exclaimed as I woke up that night,
We won`t stand for this, we`ll stand up and fight!

With each breath we do have and each word we do say,
we`ll tell about the mills, till that glorious day,

when the mills are all outlawed, and all over Missouri,
The occupation of milling, will be but a memory.

Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner
10/27/2006 -- 1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me - it is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don`t be angry with me for long, and don`t lock me up as punisment. You have your work, friends, your entertainment. I HAVE ONLY YOU!

5. Talk to me. Even if I don`t understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I`ll NEVER forget it.

7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy and uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I`m not getting the right food, I`ve been out in the sun too long, or I may be getting old and weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.

10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, `` I can`t bear to watch it`` or ``Let it happen in my absence.`` Everything is easier if you are there. Remember, I love you.

How Many Dogs Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb?
1/13/2007 -- 1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we`ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you`re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I`ll replace any wiring that`s not up to code.

3. Dachshund: You know I can`t reach that stupid lamp!

4. Rottweiler: Make me.

5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I?
Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

7. German Shepherd: I`ll change it as soon as I`ve led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven`t missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

8. Jack Russell Terrier: I`ll just pop it in while I`m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I`m sorry, but I don`t see a light bulb!

10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

11. Chihuahua : Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or ``We don`t need no stinking light bulb.``

12. Greyhound: It isn`t moving. Who cares?

13. Australian Shepherd: First, I`ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

14. Poodle: I`ll just blow in the Border Collie`s ear and he`ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?

Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:

``How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?``

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!

Grieving the loss of a cat is not easy
3/6/2007 --
For anyone who has loved and lost a cat, or other beloved pet, the pain of that loss can be profound.

Many people consider their cats part of the family. When that family member dies, the same process of grieving may kick in as if a human member had died.

Grief is a healthy response to a lousy situation.

Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross studied the process of grieving and formulated five stages that everyone goes through, although not necessarily in the same way or at the same speed.

How to teach your cat litter box lessons
4/24/2007 -- Americans adore their felines - or so it seems. We own more cats than any other type of animal companion. Still, millions of them end up in shelters every year, where, according to ASPCA estimates, 70 percent are destined for euthanasia.

Sadly, a great number of these cats are surrendered for behavioral issues that can be corrected with just a little thought and experimentation. And one of the most frequent problems is often simple to solve.

``One of the most common complaints is `won`t use litter box,``` says Jim Monsma, director of communications at the Washington Animal Rescue League in Washington, DC. But ``at least 95% of the time, the same cat uses a litter box fine at the shelter.``

So what can you do at home?
